KANPUR, India – Rare idols find ready market in tourist spots

KANPUR: UP Special Task Force (STF) has received fresh inputs that the stolen antique idols are finding lucrative customers in places of tourist importance like Varanasi, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura, Allahabad, Chitrakoot, Kushinagar, Faizabad, Ayodhya and Balrampur.

There have been rising incidents of theft of ‘ashtadhatu’ idols from temples in the region, with eight cases occurring in the past few months only. Three back-to-back cases in the past two weeks in which 18 ashtadhatu idols have been stolen from three temples show the seriousness of the situation. The stolen idols are worth crores of rupees in the international market.
