New charges lodged in antiquities theft – City & Region – The Buffalo News

The man accused of stealing documents from the Buffalo History Museum is facing new charges.A federal grand jury returned a four-count indictment charging Daniel Witek, 52, of Buffalo, with three counts of mail fraud and one count of interstate transportation of stolen goods.Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo said Witek, who he described as a museum volunteer, devised a scheme to steal historical writings connected to the late philanthropist Anson Conger Goodyear and sell them to autograph dealers in New York City and New Jersey.Witek, who denies the allegations, was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder Jr. and released.
