Man caught smuggling artifacts out of Hungary –

Border police at the Hungary-Serbia crossing at Roszke have caught a Greek man who attempted to smuggle valuable Hungarian 19th century artifacts out of the country, the local tax and customs (NAV) office told MTI on Monday.

In the course of a spot check on the Budapest-Athens bus route, Hungarian customs officers discovered baggage on a Greek bus containing fourteen statuettes, paintings, as well as several silver and bronze artifacts, Eva Nemedi Varga, spokeswoman for the local NAV directorate, said.

Experts from the Cultural Heritage Office think the objects are late 19th century.

Police have charged the Greek passenger on suspicion of smuggling cultural artifacts, the spokeswoman said.
