Bellevue museum official sentenced for theft

SEATTLE — The one-time chief financial officer for the Bellevue Art Museum who admitted taking $294,000 has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison.

The 54-year-old woman, Janet Ellinger, had pleaded guilty to theft and was given a 22-month term at Thursday’s sentencing in King County Superior Court. She also has to repay the money.

Judge Jeffrey Ramsdell refused a request to give Ellinger a first-offender waiver, which could have meant less than 90 days in jail.

Ellinger wrote herself checks or used the museum’s credit card and spent the money on herself, home improvements and her son’s college tuition. She told the judge there were a lot of reasons for taking the money but no excuse whatsoever.
