Three stolen military medals dating back to the Spanish-American War have been found by a landscaping crew 18 years after they were taken from a museum.
A U.S. National Park Service spokeswoman says the medals were awarded to the last military governor of the main fort in San Juan during the 1898 war.
Dilcia Gonzalez said Tuesday that crews digging a new trail around Fort San Felipe del Morro recently found the medals that were stolen from the fort’s Military Museum. They were rusty and somewhat battered.
The medals are now on display in nearby Fort San Cristobal. Descendants of Colonel Jose Antonio de Iriarte y Travieso donated them to the U.S. in 1963.
